- I've seen good modems and bad modems (the bad ones are invariably RPI or
- WinRPI); otherwise, I can manage to get good use out of a seemingly "bad
- quality" modem (The Bocas invariably got bad press; I used to own a Boca
- M1440I (with a 16450!) that routinely got 1650+cps regardless of operating
- system (and was a KILLER OS/2 modem).). I now own a Zoltrix ZX-288 ACi
- external which uses the ubiquitous Rockwell V.FC chipset (but it's connected
- to a 16550AFN-equipped COM2) which ran a string of SEVENTEEN STRAIGHT 28.8
- connections (over two days) to the same V.34 modem at my ISP. This is with
- Windows 95 on a 386DX-40 with 8 MB of RAM. At work I have a Pentium-133 with
- a Zoom V34X (also connected to a 16550AFN and running Windows 95) which also
- runs 28.8 most of the time. It depends on how the modem is set up, the
- operating system, the UART connected to the COM port (or installed in the
- modem for internals) and the quality of the phone lines...and, above all, the
- setup ON THE OTHER END.
